Biochemical Tissue salts are one of the best kept secrets of alternative medicine. Developed by Dr. W. H. Schüssler (1821-1898), a physicist, chemist, and homeopathic doctor, these 12 salts are the essential inorganic minerals the body needs to act optimally, every day. According to Schüssler’s theory, any deficiency in these inorganic compounds could create disease and dysfunction anywhere in the body–but fixing the problem is easy, as each inorganic salt in deficiency can be identified by the symptoms their presence or absence creates in the human body.
The Twelve Salts
1. Calcium Flouride (Calc. Flour.)
Responsible for all the elasticity within the body–this salt is needed on the surface of cells, bones, ligaments, tissue and blood vessels. Deficiencies lead to things like varicose veins, stretched ligaments, over-relaxed organs, cavities, and hardened glands.
2. Calcium Phosphate (Calc. Phos.)
This is a bone, nerve, and convalescing remedy. This compound is essential for protein assimilation; it builds blood, cells, and bone. It also strengthens the parasympathetic nerve, which has a calming effect on the body. A deficiency will cause osteoporosis, irregular heartbeat, cramps, insomnia, anemia, and depression.
3. Calcium Sulphate (Calc. Sulph.)
A cleansing remedy, necessary for proper functioning of the liver, gallbladder, heart, brain, spleen, ovaries, and testicles. A deficiency in this compound will lead to infertility, lupus, gout, chronic cough, stomach ulcer, weakness and chronic fatigue syndrome, and rheumatism in its many forms.
4. Iron Phosphate (Ferr. Phos.)
A wonderful first aid remedy for any inflammation and infection, this builds the hemoglobin and attracts oxygen into the blood. Use this tissue salt for any inflammation or infection; use for headaches with chills, congestion, open wounds that are fresh, fevers, colds, or arthritic pain. When the body is deficient in this compound, iron deficiency anemia results, as do fevers, colds, and any condition that ends with “itis”.
5. Potassium Chloride (Kali Mur.)
This is a second stage of inflammation/detoxification remedy, useful in regulating waste excretion through lymph and glandular systems as well as through the kidneys. It’s useful for coughs and colds, and can be alternated with Ferrum Phos. for colds or to treat children’s feverish ailments. Without this compound, glands and lymph nodes swell, blood clots too easily (and creates a danger of thrombosis), and there is a tendency to chronic inflammation and congestion.
6. Potassium Phosphate (Kali Phos.)
This is an excellent brain and nerve remedy that strengthens the sympathetic nerves and stimulates the body. This works as an antiseptic in cases of nervous exhaustion. Without it, the body will suffer exhaustion, memory loss, sleeplessness, muscular atrophy, lameness, high fever, and stress related ailments.
7. Potassium Sulphate (Kali Sulph.)
Useful for third stage inflammation and cell oxygen supply, this salt builds cells for the uppermost layer of the epidermis, regulates the metabolism, and promotes liver and digestive function. Without it, there is susceptibility to allergies, skin disorders like eczema and acne, nervous digestive problems such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and hair loss and diseased nails. This is a particularly effective salt to use to treat teenage acne.
8. Magnesium Phosphate (Mag. Phos.)
Responsible for all involuntary movements and for relaxation, this salt directs the autonomic nervous system and has an effect on the action of the heart, circulation, glandular system, digestive organs, and the overall metabolism of the body. Symptoms such as irregular heartbeat, asthma, hormonal imbalance, migraines, spasmodic nerve pain, diabetes, dystonia/neurosis, or any functional disturbance accompanied by a nervous system disorder that is not traceable to any physical cause all point to a need for this tissue salt.
9. Sodium Chloride (Nat. Mur.)
The water regulating salt throughout the body, this builds cartilage, synovial fluid, and brain fluids. It also produces stomach juices and cell division. A deficiency leads to slipped discs, rheumatism in the joints, edema, dehydration, watery colds, and a loss of memory and senses–sense of taste and smell specifically. Not enough Natrum Muriaticum also brings about loss of tears.
10. Sodium Phosphate (Nat. Phos.)
The acid neutralizer, this salt regulates the balance of fats and acids in the body. Those who suffer from a deficiency in this salt suffer from obesity, diabetes, excessive uric acid amounts and over acidity of the blood; this is a great salt to treat gastric disorders, such as persistent heartburn. Alkalinizing the body with Nat. Phos. also alleviates rheumatic tendencies.
11. Sodium Sulphate (Nat. Sulph.)
As this salt metabolizes carbohydrates. It is essential for the proper digestion of sugars and starches, and for the withdrawal of water from cells. Deficiency leads to edema, diabetes, kidney trouble, jaundice, complaints of the liver and bilious (gallbladder) attacks.
12. Silicea (or Silica)
Silicea is a connective tissue builder, and it regulates the conductivity of nerves in abscesses, boils, carbuncles, and styes. Promotes the formation of pus and ushers it out of the body. This mineral creates shiny hair, shiny eyes, and very strong fingernails. A deficiency will lead to weakened connective tissue; sensitivity to light and noise; irritability; and brittle, lacklustre hair and nails.
Learning to Use the Tissue Salts for Acute Complaints
Because Schüssler was a homeopath, he diluted and succussed the tissue salt preparations to 6X and 12X potencies, and this process made the salts bioavailable to the human body at the cell level. Normally, the inorganic compounds found in the blood play a role in distributing and helping the body to assimilate the blood’s organic matter (fats, proteins, sugars, and water). They are impossible to replace via food sources. The Schüssler tissue salts allow us to address the deficiency on both a nutritional level and an energetic level, as long as the salts fit the symptom picture of the individual patient.
Schüssler’s tissue salts are inexpensive, very easy to use with the right biochemical handbook (the one you like best), and they’re easy for anyone to take. They’re effective with children, and people in all ages and stages of their lives. They are a wonderful choice for treating chronic and acute problems whenever they occur, and they are equally useful for treating animals. In all cases, the tissue salts are gentle in action. They cause no side effects or addiction and they work quickly and safely.
I often use Biochemical Tissue salts in conjunction with a homeopathic remedy if I feel that a deep-seated nutritional deficiency is causing specific problems in my patients (this is part of an approach to address the “hygiene”, which includes nutrition or any other maintaining cause of an illness), and then treating homeopathically. Some of the cell salts are useful for treating the onset of flu, or tough skin problems like acne or wrinkles or eczema; others are fantastic for spasmodic and cramping pains especially in menstruating women–they work far more quickly to bring relief than any over-the-counter medication available, and they may likely relieve the suffering of cramps like these permanently. Ferrum Phos, in particular, is a wonderful salt to address osteoporosis and anemia; they can give anyone facing these challenges a viable, safe and easy-to-live-with solution to these insidious, chronic diseases without facing long-term prescription drug use.
Anyone can learn to use the tissue salts to treat acute ailments in family members and pets, and I recommend them as a safer option than guessing which single homeopathic single remedy to use, or any polypharmacy combination remedy available over the counter. Since there are only 12 salts to choose from (as opposed to more than 2000 homeopathic remedies to choose from–and uncountable polypharmacy patent medicines whose actions are all dodgy), it’s easy to match the symptoms expressed to the symptom pictures of the individual salts. Invest in a concise, but thorough Biochemic Tissue Salt handbook which will help you select the most appropriate salt for your particular situation. You can download a helpful Biochemic Tissue Salt chart here, and an abbreviated materia medica/repertory/how to article by Miranda Castro here, if a handbook is not available near you.
